The Indian football team skipper will be marrying former Indian footballer Subroto Bhattacharya’s daughter.

Sonam, who currently runs two star hotels in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area, has a management degree from a Scotland-based university.

Sonam’s father, who was a former Mohun Bagan footballer, has been a mentor to Chhetri as he began his career.

“I have seen Sunil grow as a footballer. I got him to Kolkata Maidan in 2003 and he has improved as a footballer. I can compare him to Xavier Pius of our times,” Subroto Bhattacharya was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times.

“Yes, Sunil came and met us. They have been in a relationship and I think they should be happy for the rest of their lives. He (Chhetri) is a good lad and I like his innocence” Bhattacharya said further.

Chhetri is a part of Ranbir Kapoor-owned Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League, and also captained the Bengaluru FC side which became the first Indian team to reach AFC Cup final this year.

Sunil Chhetri is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Indian club Bengaluru FC and the Indian national team. He is both the most-capped player, and all-time top goalscorer for the India national team, with 56 goals in 97 appearances. He is also the current captain of the national team.

Sunil Chhetri was born on 3 August 1984 to K.B. Chhetri, an officer in the Electronics and Mechanical Engineers Corps of the Indian Army, and Sushila Chhetri in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.

His father played for the Indian Army's team while his mother and her twin sisters played for the Nepal women's national team. Chhetri started playing football from a young age taking part in various tournaments.

Chhetri began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002. He then moved to JCT where he scored 21 goals in 48 games, the most he has scored for any side in his career. He signed for the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer in 2010, becoming the third player from the subcontinent of note to go abroad.

However, that stint in the United States did not last long and soon he was back in India's I-League where he played for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan before going back abroad. This time he was signed by Sporting Clube de Portugal of the Primeira Liga where he played for the club's reserve side.
